Sneak Peek: Mickey and the Magical Map

| April 28, 2013 | 2 Replies

Recently I was able to get a sneak peek into the creation of the new live show coming this Summer to the Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland Park.  No video was allowed, but I was able to get a peek at the stage, get a sample of what the set can “do”, plus take a look at one of the dance numbers that’s currently in rehearsal.  Disney Creative Entertainment is very excited about this show and looking at just a few pictures, you can see why.

Michael Jung, Vice President of Creative Theatrical Development, and Mike Layman, Technical Director, showed off the 28 foot by 20 foot screen and told us a little about the new show.

Mickey and the Magical Map, stars Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer’s apprentice to Yen Sid.   Yen Sid directs his (singing and dancing) Mapmakers to paint a wondrous map, capable of taking dreamers to any place imaginable.

Of course, Mickey’s curiosity gets the better of him and he stumbles upon the map’s magical powers.  The map takes Mickey on several adventures, including a princess medley featuring Pocahontas, Mulan and Rapunzel.

Other films featured include “The Little Mermaid”, “The Princess and the Frog”, and “The Jungle Book”.  You’ll notice something a little different about King Louie.

We were told that the trumpeter in the picture above will be performing live during “I Wan’na Be Like You”!  The show features a cast of about 24 singers, dancers and characters.

Mickey and the Magical Map is scheduled for five performances per day in the 1,830 seat Fantasyland Theatre deep in the heart of Fantasyland beginning (officially) May 25, 2013.

What are those big lines in the screen?

They’re platforms/walkways for the cast to perform on.
