Monsters University Merchandise Scares Up Fun at Disney Parks

Looking to scare up some fun this summer? Mike Wazowski, a monster who takes his scaring seriously, and James P. Sullivan (otherwise known as “Sulley”), a natural scarer and jokester, team up once again to bring laughs to the big screen in Disney-Pixar’s Monsters University next month. The film, a prequel to the highly successful Monsters Inc., tells the story of just how Mike and Sulley honed their skills before stepping out into the real world. To help celebrate the release, Disney Merchandise has a new line of hats, shirts, pins, toys, and more trickling into shops at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

If you’re like me, you felt quite a bit of envy watching the coverage of Disney Parks’ Monstrous Summer All-Nighter this past weekend. From the early morning on May 24 through the 25, Disney fans from around the world partied their way through special events and experiences in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Disney California Adventure, and Disneyland. The monstrous fun kicked off at 6 a.m. and continued until the next morning. Guests enjoyed dance parties, fireworks, parades, and even themed treats from sweet shops around the parks.

Of course, what really made me jealous was seeing all of the fantastic merchandise available for this event. Limited time t-shirts, ear hats, and more lined the shelves for anyone wanting to spruce themselves up before joining in on the festivities. I particularly loved the logo of the t-shirt and how it was available with either “Magic Kingdom” or “Disneyland Resort” printed on the arm sleeve depending upon where you attended the event.

The popular Mike “Eye-glasses” are still available at the Emporium in the Magic Kingdom and at Disney California Adventure for those hoping to snag a pair; the furry light-up Sulley ear hats, however, appear to be sold out. These items were a part of Disney’s Limited Time Magic promotion and are not expected, at least at time of publication, to be produced again. Due to their popularity, it would be a mistake for Disney not to offer these again or at least products that are similar especially as we reach the film’s premiere on June 21.

With this being said, fans of Monsters University will be happy to know that additional items have already starting popping up in shops and will continue to do so throughout the summer. More apparel, plush, trading pins, and toys designed in honor of the movie have been made; unlike the items mentioned above, these will be available all summer long. Some will hit the shelves later next month while others have already populated shops such as the Emporium in Walt Disney World and Disneyland and Elias & Co. in Disney California Adventure.

In addition to the standard plush and t-shirts, Disney Merchandise is also offering a few unique items that don’t always appear for each movie or character. One of these is a Sulley Monster Mask, as seen centered in the below picture, which transforms you into the likeness of our blue monster friend. The jaw opens and closes, and its eyebrows and lips move to help you practice your next best scare. I think that this is a fun souvenir for kids (and adults). Those looking for something a little bit more cuddly might enjoy the Sulley character pillow instead.

If you’re more of a Mike fan, there’s plenty of items celebrating his role in the story, too. Plush, apparel, and toys are available. There’s even an animated glow necklace for sale. It would be fun to use this item during parades and nighttime shows.

Collectors of both Vinylmation and Disney pins will also find something to enjoy. On June 14, Series 1 of the Monsters University vinyls will be up for grabs in stores. Disney Design Group artist, Ron Cohee, will be available at Downtown Disney’s D-Street on the West Side to sign your figures from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity to check out the new collection as well as meet the artist responsible for its creation.

If Disney pin trading is more your style, be on the look out for new pins starting on June 21, the day of the film’s release. The limited edition mystery set will feature both familiar and new characters. There is also a “chaser” pin of which only 250 exist. Similarly, an opening day dangle pin will be sold and, like the chaser of the mystery set, few will be around for long (just 2,000 to be exact). Be sure to visit Disney Pin Traders in Downtown Disney if you are interested in pins as this is the easiest location to purchase them. They will also be available at other stores including those on Main Street in Magic Kingdom and in Disneyland.

Even though I would have loved to hit the parks for the all night party, I’m pretty satisfied knowing there will be a lot of new merchandise available this summer. Monsters University is sure to be a fun film, and I love the way Disney is promoting it throughout the next few months. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of these items and hope you enjoy them right along with me!

I was just wondering if these are going to stop being sold later in the summer. I’m going the end of August to the beginning of September, so I don’t want to get my hopes up that I might get some merchandise if it’s not likely.
