Summer Never Ends: Neon Merchandise at Disney Parks

| August 22, 2013 | 5 Replies

Even though the air is getting cooler and school buses are once again driving down the streets, summertime is still in full swing at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. As a part of the Monstrous Summer campaign, Sulley and Mike Wazowski, two quirky characters from Monsters University, are brightening up the days at the parks. With the latest items from a collection of neon apparel and accessories, you can also sport your love for Disney in a blazing new way.

Towards the middle of the spring, I happened to be walking down the aisle of a local store (think bullseye) when something caught my eye: NEON! Everywhere I turned I saw hues brighter than the sun and oh so reminiscent of the 80s some of us would like to forget; you know what I’m talking about: big hair, long nails, bold colors, and…oh, well maybe some of us in Jersey still pay tribute to this period of fashion. Anyway, I digress.
With this “new” wave of neon clothing, it only made sense that Disney merchandise jump on the bandwagon and join in on the fun. Throughout the summer, more and more items have been added to the collection and are definitely becoming popular among guests. Everything from shirts to scarves to bags has been color-intensified, and I thought you’d enjoy seeing some of what’s available.

My first stop was Downtown Disney in Florida where guests can find the mecca of all merchandise locations, World of Disney. This 50,000 sq. ft. shop is filled with items for the home, apparel, toys, jewelry, and more, so it only made sense to swing by in search of neon mania. I was greeted by some familiar faces. Mickey and the gang are featured in these off-the-shoulder style shirts in bright colors. These are made of a thin cotton which is perfect for the warm Florida sunshine. You can also find a cute gray tank that has some iconic character pictures from the past. This would work well as the weather gets a little cooler and layering becomes a must in Walt Disney World; sport the tee and tank in the morning and just the tank in the afternoon when the sun raises temperatures.

Nearby, I took a quick peek in littlemissmatched towards the front of the Marketplace. What a fun place! The store’s mantra is that “matching is mundane, but mixing patterns and colors is monumentally cool,” and boy, does that show upon entering the brightly colored space. It was a neon-lover’s dream! Because all of the items contain similar color schemes, guests are encouraged to “mix and match” patterns to create their own individual style. The socks, which were the original items sold at the store before it branched out, are absolutely adorable. They also had some great necklaces featuring oversized flowers and rhinestones. Many of the items fit both girls and women.

Continuing my search led me to what I consider to be the best of Walt Disney World stores on property: the Main Street shops in the Magic Kingdom. There’s just something special about browsing the intricately decorated windows and strolling through “small town America” looking for that special item to take home. I stopped at both The Emporium and Uptown Jewelers to see what else the neon collection had to offer and was delighted to see a few fun accessories. First up was this fun tote bag that compliments the tank from above. It highlights some of the popular icons of Walt Disney World and has plenty of room to hold all of your park touring goodies. My favorite part is the big black bow on the top left corner. It’s too cute!

Looking to save your scalp from the Florida sun? A few new hats will do the trick! These neon hats are so much fun to wear. There’s several styles that all fit in with the neon theme. Some have added details like embroidery, sequins, and beading which are nice touches. Others are simpler. All highlight our love of the mouse and do so in a bold way.

In addition to bags and hats, there are many types of neon jewelry that can be found in the shops. Earrings, necklaces, and bracelets made from a variety of materials add more fun to any 80s-inspired outfit. I love the hoops made from string and wire shown below. Kids will enjoy the simpler pony bead pieces some of which include a silver Mickey charm.

The last neon item that brought a smile to my face was something I spotted in kids’ hair accessories. These cute barrettes and hair extensions were a favorite among shoppers. I saw young girls and teenagers wearing them in the parks. I love the colors and Mickey heads on them!

If you’re looking to add a bit of color to your wardrobe before the winter blues hit, check out these neon items during your next trip the the parks. Not only are they fun, but they are a great reminder to live bold and cherish life’s every moment. I hope you enjoyed our little shopping trip. Until next time!
