The 6th Annual Indianapolis DIS Meet for Give Kids the World

| September 12, 2013 | 1 Reply

From the Northeast, to Canada, and now to the Midwest the DIS Unplugged podcast team has been sweeping the nation to attend DIS fundraising meets in an effort to raise money for Give Kids the World Village in Central Florida.  Every dollar raised at these Disney meets goes to help send children and their families with life-threatening illnesses to the Central Florida theme parks.  Their most recent stop was at the 6th annual Indianapolis DIS Meet, a gathering of Disney fans from all over the Midwest.

The day started with several volunteers working to set up both halls for the event.   This year we decided to add a second hall to the meet so children had their own space for kids’ activities.  With 2 halls came twice the work so the volunteers rolled-up their sleeves to make both spaces look as festive as possible.

The meet started promptly at 1:00pm.   Guests began coming to the front door at the start and the main hall began filling up quickly.   Each guest who attended the meet received a raffle ticket for prize drawings throughout the day.   Additional tickets could be purchased with the proceeds going to Give Kids the World.  Also, an extensive silent auction was set up with Disney art and memorabilia on display.  Additional items donated by local vendors were also up for grabs.

One of the goals of our event is to incorporate as much of the Disney theme parks into it as possible.   Things like refreshing Dole Whips, life-size character stand-ups, Agent P characters to color, Disney dance parties, and art of animation drawing class kids activities were all part of this year’s meet. A table full of photo booth props was available for guests to get creative.

Some guests go all out and bring Disney-inspired food to the meet.   Since it is a pitch-in format, guests often get creative with the dishes they bring.

All of these little touches are what makes our meet so special and enjoyable.   It’s a day where you can get your Disney fix without hopping on a plane to Orlando.

Towards the end of our meet The DIS Unplugged podcast team began the live taping of their weekly show.   After their news and roundtable rapid fire segments, our volunteers came up to the stage with Indy’s world famous shrimp cocktail from Harry & Izzy’s and St. Elmo’s Steak House – a big hit for sure with the podcasters.  At the end of the show, one lucky attendee won a 6-night, 7-day Walt Disney World trip with dining and tickets for 4, courtesy of Dreams Unlimited Travel.   It left many guests on the edge of their seats as the ticket number was read.

While the show wrapped-up, we read the final total of all the funds raised during the meet.  In the end, $8600 was raised for Give Kids the World Village which should send more than 2 families to the Central Florida attractions.  It’s something very gratifying we can all be proud of.

As the meet came to an end and the last of the Disney gift cards and prizes were given away, we took a deep breath and began reflecting on the success of the meet.  It’s difficult to change something that works so well, and over the past 6 years we haven’t changed the event a lot.   We’ve just grown with the crowd in hopes to raise as much money as possible for a fantastic organization: Give Kids the World.
