Top 5 things to experience at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

| May 16, 2014 | 3 Replies

If you are a Star Wars fan, this is a great time to visit Walt Disney World. Today started the first Star Wars Weekend at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for 2014. The dates for this year are May 16-18, 23-25, 30-June 1, 6-8, and 13-15, 2014. The theme this year is “Join The Rebellion.”

There is so much to see and do that you can’t possibly do it all in one day. I will be going back several more times during this event, so I am going to give you my Top 5 things to experience if you get the chance to go.

#5 The Food- if you have a fondness for sweets, be sure to stop by a Quick Service restaurant location or Starring Rolls Cafe. There is a Darth Vader cupcake and a Yoda cupcake.

My Yoda cupcake was very tasty.  It survived the trip home in the car and I saved half for later, because it is a big cupcake.  There is also a Darth Vader Souvenir Popcorn Bucket that is sold at popcorn carts throughout the park. If you get thirsty, there is a cute but pricey Stormtrooper Souvenir Mug. The park map also indicates these items can be purchased at Darth’s Mall at Ackbar’s Snackbar next to the limited edition merchandise and the D-Tech booth.

#4 The merchandise- Darth’s Mall is located next to Toy Story Midway Mania.  Pack your patience if you decide you want to go shopping here.  I waited 30 minutes outside and another 20 minutes inside before I even got inside the room where the merchandise was.  Of course Walt Disney World thought of a way for you to view the merchandise before you ever make it into the room.  While you are waiting in the inside line you can check the tablets to see the merchandise.

If you feel you need to wrap your car with Star Wars characters you will find everything you need here.

#3 Costumed Characters – There are a number of character experiences in the park.  Just look for the Mickey head on the park map. Just be aware that while you are waiting in line they may switch out a character and replace it with a different one.

This is a photo opportunity. There are times of the day where you will see Jedi and Clone Trooper characters here.

#2-  Symphony in the Stars Fireworks and the DJ Lobot Dance Party- No one does fireworks like Disney does!! Disney’s Hollywood Studios doesn’t have regular fireworks so it is always a treat to view them. They are shot off behind the Hat, so be sure to be in a location where you can get a great view.  As far as the Dance Party I love when they have a party in the park.  It is fun to dance and sing along to the not so typical music in the park. It’s a great place for the kids to burn off a little energy before the fireworks.

#1- Celebrities, guests and autographs- If you are a Star Wars Fan, be sure to use FastPasses to some of the events happening in the park over the weekend. A FastPass is required for the autograph sessions. These are extremely limited and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to the right of the main entrance touch points outside Disney’s Hollywood Studios. They may start to distribute them before the park opens. All you need to do is get in the line for the celebrity you would like to meet. Just a reminder that you can’t save a place in line for others. While you are waiting you will receive a wristband.  Your theme park ticket and wristband allow you to receive one FastPass ticket. You can’t pick up FastPass tickets for anyone that is not in line with you.  If you just want a photo of the different characters, don’t miss the “Legends of the Force” Motorcade that takes place at 11:30 AM at the front of the park.

Don’t forget your sunscreen, your hat, your cooling towel, and plenty of water for your day in the park!  Today it was cooler than usual but usually the heat can be brutal. Take frequent breaks in the air conditioned stores.  Don’t forget to have a great time during Star Wars Weekends!  See you in the parks!

Great coverage Kathy! I can’t make it for Star Wars weekends this year but Alex will be down next week – I hope she buys her dad a t-shirt :)
