I get asked this question quite often from friends and clients. Is there something I can visit before or after my cruise from Port Canaveral? I will be doing a series of blogs about places you can visit if you only have a short time or if you want to spend a day by the Port. The Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral is a great place to visit to learn more about the area, as well as the spectacular view from the observation deck at the top.
The cost to explore is very reasonable. The admission price for Adults is $6.50 and children 3-10 are only $2.50. They also have a very reasonable annual pass option as well as a discounted rate for the military and seniors. They are open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Here is a link to the directions.
If you are looking for a great place to take a picture of the cruise ships in port, be sure to head to the observation deck.
If you have ever wondered if they test the life boats, these photos answer that question. It was fun watching them scurry around in the harbor.
They also have a great movie about the area. Be sure to check at the desk for the times the movie is played.
There are plenty of informational signs that will help you locate items as you look out over the horizon.
Be sure to get your picture taken with the gator on the roof. This is the only safe alligator you should approach in Florida.
We headed to the roof first because we wanted to enjoy the view. If you aren’t in a big hurry, you can work you way up to the observation deck floor by floor. You will receive a pamphlet with the layout of the building.
If you are a fan of the NASA Space program they have one floor dedicated to it. I spent quite a lot of time there. This would be a good place to show your children some of the displays if you don’t have time to visit the Kennedy Space Center. The Exploration Tower sometimes offers special packages to view a rocket launch from their building. Be sure to check their website for details.
There is another floor where you can learn about the river and the seas in the area. They also have some suggestions of things to do in the area.
There is a snack bar and gift shop on the first floor. You can easily make this a half day experience or you could go straight to the observation deck to take some pictures. I highly recommend visiting the Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral. This is about an hour and fifteen minutes from Walt Disney World. It is past the cruise terminal in Port Canaveral.
While you are in the area, I suggest dropping into the DISboards.com Welcome Center. It is just one mile from the Disney Cruise Line terminal. If you are a Dreams Unlimited Travel client you will receive a special gift just for stopping by. Teresa and her staff will make you feel welcome. You can enjoy complimentary refreshments and wi-fi for your use. If you should have questions about booking a Disney vacation they will be able to assist you. They are open 5 days a week and the hours are subject to change based on when Disney ships are in port.
See you in the parks!
