Parents are always looking for ways to create wonderful memories for themselves and their children. Taking them to Walt Disney World or Disneyland is one of the best and most popular ways of doing just that. Unfortunately, many kids do not know who Walt Disney was and what is even more alarming, many kids do not know that he was an actual person!
Recently Disney Editions released Walt Disney: Drawn from Imagination, by Bill Scollon, a biography about Walt Disney that is written specifically for kids. Unlike some of the other Walt Disney biographies, Walt Disney: Drawn from Imagination, does not go into detail about his life, but rather touches on every aspect before quickly moving to the next. This book is probably not for the diehard Disney fan (although you will learn some facts about Walt that you may not have known before), but it is definitely a great foundation for young people.
Scollon does an excellent job of following Walt through the various stages of his life. The thirteen chapters touch on his early years (Century of Promise, Rural Beginnings, The Big City and Growing Up), through his Hollywood years (Launching a Career, Hollywood, Mickey Mouse, The Fairest of them All, Challenges and The Small Screen), and conclude with Walt’s theme parks and untimely death (The Happiest Place on Earth, Looking East and Untimely Passing).
Although Scollon skips over many details throughout Walt’s life, all the important facts and events are covered. He also sets up many of the chapters by giving the reader a little about what was happening in the world overall. It is this set up that helps to make the connection as to why Walt did what he did.
In addition to including some wonderful color and black and white photographs, Scollon includes grey boxed sidebars with titles like “Close Up,” “Newsworthy,” “Fast Forward,” “Rewind,” and “Quick Take.”
Like the Disney Parks, Walt Disney: Drawn from Imagination is perfect for young and old alike.
