The Disneyland Resort has hosted the tradition of making holiday gingerbread sculptures in the past, ranging from the small creations that were displayed in Storytellers Cafe to the larger piece done last year at the entrance to the Disneyland Hotel. This year, however, the tide of size and scope has turned and the newest sculpture opened yesterday at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa. A beautiful, and edible, replica of the hotel was created and placed at the Hearthstone Lounge‘s end of the Grand’s massive lobby.
At each end, signs told the story of how this massive structure was created, as well as its dimensions. It’s 7.5 feet tall and 12 feet wide, weighs over 1200 lbs (over 500 pounds of gingerbread alone), and took 25 Cast Members 2625 hours to complete! It also has 7 hidden Mickeys, which you will have to find for yourselves – I’m not telling!
While the Disney Parks Blog seemed to describe the massive edible structure as being a store for treats, that honor goes to a bartender-manned table set off to the side.
Here, you can get hot cocoa and hot cider in a couple ways and sizes – I liked the rum version with the white and dark chocolate “straw,” while my girls chose the plain. They even have a toppings “bar” with marshmallows and other things, to make it special!
Several treats were also available for purchase, including traditional German stollen bread – filled with candied fruit and marzipan, iced gingerbread cookies, and iced shortbread cookies in the shape of snowmen. The stollen can be purchased by the slice, as I did, or whole, with or without a gift box! Cookie decorating kits with frosting and sprinkles can also be purchased, if you’re feeling a bit creative.
This new addition seems to be drawing quite a bit of attention! I would make a point of stopping by, picking up a snack and enjoying the atmosphere of the Grand Californian lobby. After all, it is the holiday season and even Santa and his carolers find it quite the place to hang our after a long day in the parks. I’m certain you will too!
