Welcome to the 2015 7 in 7 series where we will be visiting 7 Walt Disney World resorts in 7 days. We will be sharing our experiences through blogs, photos and videos from our time at these resorts. We will also be publishing a daily video where we talk about our thoughts after visiting each resort. Check back daily to see where we went next.
Day 7: Today we stayed at Disney’s Old Key West Resort. This is a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) resort. This resort opened in 1991 and was the first of the DVC resorts. Its original name was Disney Vacation Club Resort. The name change occurred in 1996. There are 49 buildings and only 3 of them have elevators. We were lucky enough that we got a first floor villa.
This resort seems to be overlooked when people are planning a trip to Walt Disney World. I was very pleasantly surprised when I entered the 2 Bedroom Villa where we were staying. I think I might have found a new favorite place to stay when there is a group of us.
You have a number of choices at this resort. Like the typical DVC resort you have the Deluxe Studio that sleeps 4, the 1 Bedroom Villa that sleeps 5, the 2 Bedroom that sleeps 9, and this resort offers a 3 bedroom Grand Villa that sleeps 12 in a 2 story layout.
You can use Disney’s free bus transportation or take the boat to Downtown Disney.
This resort has plenty of recreational activities. The main pool is unique as it has a sauna that you can enjoy. There are life jackets for the children to use while at the pool. There is a large sandy area for the kids to play amongst the oversized pail and bucket. If you like playing tennis or basketball you will find that available. There is a volleyball court also along the river. If you long to ride a bike they have several styles that you can choose from. The resort also has a running trail.
The resort does have a sit down restaurant, Olivia’s Cafe. I highly recommend an advanced dining reservation here because it is very popular. If you are looking for a place to unwind, the Gurgling Suitcase is a full service bar.
We had 7 people in our 2 Bedroom Villa and it wasn’t cramped at all. This would be the perfect place to cook a meal or two in your fully equipped kitchen and dine out on your patio enjoying the beautiful views.
So would I stay here again? Yes! In a heartbeat I would stay here with my extended family. We are already looking at staying here for Thanksgiving. Our family is content to make the resort the destination since we all live nearby. The resort has everything we might need for a relaxing vacation. I like the idea of having a full kitchen where we could cook our holiday meal in the villa and settle in for a fun time with family at a beautiful resort. If you are looking for a livelier time to your vacation you might find other Disney Vacation Club resorts more to your liking. So many Walt Disney World resorts, so little time!
